Media freedom continues to stand perilously close to breaking point in many EU countries and in some, it needs to be almost completely revived, Liberties’ Media Freedom Report 2024 finds.
On 10 April 2024, the European Parliament adopted the New Pact on Migration and Asylum, a package of reforms expanding the criminalisation and digital surveillance of migrants. Despite civil society organisations’ repeated warnings, the Pact “will normalise the arbitrary use of immigration detention, including for children and families, increase racial profiling, use ‘crisis’ procedures to enable pushbacks, and return individuals to so called ‘safe third countries’ where they are at risk of violence, torture, and arbitrary imprisonment”.

The rule of law in the EU continued to deteriorate in 2023, as governments further weakened legal and democratic checks and balances, according to the newly published Liberties Rule of Law Report 2024.
As part of the project "Facts Against Hate", CPS is presenting two examples of good practice of intersectoral cooperation in the field of prevention of discrimination, hatred and violence.
Ministry of Interior of the Republic of Finland published a guide for police officers and stakeholders "Good practices for identifying and preventing acts of hatred". This guide is a part of the joint project Facts Against Hate. The guide is also available in Finnish, Swedish and Croatian.
The spreading of hate speech online is making it increasingly difficult to secure human rights, to protect human dignity, and to maintain the democratic standards of public communication and debate.
The ‘Mutual learning regional conference on good practices and lessons learned from countering hate speech online’, which was organised online on 14 and 15 October 2020, presented good practices, lessons learned and developments in combating hate speech online. It brought together experts and practitioners from Slovenia, Croatia and Serbia and also experts from other EU Member States. The aim of the conference was to contribute to the mutual learning in this important field.
