Rights Behind Bars

Centre for Peace Studies (CPS) is a partner in international project “Access to Justice for Victims of Violent Crimes Suffered in Detention” aimed at improving access to justice for victims of violent crime suffered in pre-trial and immigration detention.

Project focuses on ensuring that Directive 2012/29/EU establishes minimum standards on the rights, support and protection of victims of crime and Directive 2004/80/EC relating to compensation to crime victims is implemented.

Even though, we had many difficulties in entering the facilities, we have managed to conduct a research from November 2018 until February 2019 with five groups of participants: institutions, lawyers, NGO’s, support services and victims. Results of this research were taken into account for making a Regional Guidance Note that we are today launching in European Parliament together with other partners: Redress NL from Netherland, Antigone from Italy, Hungarian Helsinki Committee from Hungary and Civil Rights Defenders from Sweden.

As in other project countries, Croatia doesn’t recognize at all victims of crimes suffered in detention – therefore we find very important to open the topic in public and advocate for their rights. Especially for the rights of persons in migrant detention.

You can find Regional Guidance Note in attachment.

National launching of Croatian Guidance Note will be happening on December 03rd 2019 during the Human Rights Film Festival.
