Caring to Include: trauma-informed support for refugees and migrants in Europe
International solidarity for migrant and refugee protection is more critical than ever, as escalating border closures, pushbacks, and human rights violations in Europe are leaving many fleeing war and persecution without safe or sustainable solutions.
This three-year project addresses the urgent need for trauma-informed support for refugees and migrants while promoting mental well-being for NGO staff and volunteers. Led by the Dutch Council for Refugees in collaboration with six European partners from Hungary, Estonia, Malta, Cyprus, Greece, and Croatia, the project aims to mitigate the impact of trauma and stress on social inclusion and enhance support for those working with vulnerable groups.
We are building a sustainable Community of Practice (CoP) for European NGOs to share knowledge, expertise, and best practices. Two toolkits will also be developed—one focusing on mental health and self-care for NGO workers and another on trauma-informed, culturally sensitive methods for supporting refugees and migrants. These resources will enable training, exchange programs, and the long-term implementation of improved service delivery models within participating organisations.
By fostering collaboration and sharing expertise, we seek to strengthen solidarity and ensure better support for migrants, refugees, and those working tirelessly on their behalf.
