Organizational Assessment on Trauma-Informed Care for Refugee Assisting Organizations

The Trauma-Informed Practice Assessment Toolkit helps organizations supporting refugees assess how well trauma-informed principles are embedded across their services, systems, and organizational culture.

Designed as a reflection and improvement tool—not an audit or compliance exercise—the toolkit helps organizations identify strengths, recognize risks and gaps, and identify areas for further development.

The assessment covers six domains, each reflecting a key area of trauma-informed practice within an organization:

• Access to services
• Physical environment
• Participation and feedback
• Staff awareness and training
• Organisational culture and leadership
• Staff well-being and support

Together, these domains provide a holistic picture of how principles such as safety, trust, choice, collaboration, and empowerment are reflected in both service users’ experiences and the organization's internal practices.

Each domain includes a brief overview, practical examples, and 10 assessment questions. Questions are scored on a 1–5 implementation scale, allowing organisations to generate domain-level scores and an overall organisational score indicating their level of trauma-informed maturity.

The toolkit can be completed using the accompanying Excel workbook or a survey platform that supports weighted scoring. It is designed to be used alongside the accompanying organisational guidelines, which provide the framework for interpreting the results and supporting meaningful organisational development.
