The Global Education Week is a Europe wide awareness raising event. It relates to the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s) which aim to eliminate extreme poverty, reduce inequalities and combat the threat of climate change by 2030.
It is a call to rethink our habits and ways of living, spending and consuming but also find new ways of education and socialisation.
This year, the theme is: "Wake Up! This is the final call for climate.”
The Global Education Week encourage educators and learners to explore educational activities for global citizenship. In line with Target 4.7 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4, the Global Education Week addresses issues related to diversity and inequality at the local and global levels, to foster:
- Awareness of the wider world and of our own role as world citizens
- Attitudes of respect for diversity and intercultural communication skills
- Ability to take action to make the world a more equitable and sustainable place
- Responsibility for our own actions

Global Education teacher study visit to Paris

From 21 to 24.11. Centre for Peace Studies is organizing a study visit for Croatian teachers to the partner organization La Ligue de l'enseignement in Paris as part of the global education project 'Let's play the fraternity card in Europe' (https://www.fraternity-card.eu/). Through 'Let's play' activities, 150,000 students in France, Spain, Poland and Croatia analyzed photographs that focused on climate justice, gender equality, migration and refugees, activism and human rights, and designed messages of solidarity to their fellow citizens. This encourages the opening of schools to the community and the initiation of dialogue on important social topics and the correlation of global challenges and local realities. At the study visit, teachers from 5 Croatian schools will discuss with their colleagues from Poland, Spain and France the implementation of civic education in formal education systems, the opportunities offered by the formal system for working on contemporary topics and developing solidarity and socially engaged photography and art.

Training for trainers will critically reflect on the role of education as a significant actor in social reproduction and power relations, but also an important actor in social change. Participants will work on how to place education in the service of social groups exposed to social injustice (violation of economic, social, political rights); how to identify your own social positions and build tools for social change; how to empower the disenfranchised and encourage the deconstruction of the system, social change, and how to open dialogic learning processes and actively involve everyone who participates in the process.

Professor Philip Alston, UN Special Rapporteur on Extreme Poverty and Human Rights, stated in his report 'Climate Change and Poverty' in June 2019 that the world is facing "climate apartheid," during which the effects of climate change will deepen inequalities in societies and endanger the human rights of many.
In the panel, we will address the issues of links and interdependencies of human rights, inequalities and the state of our environment, and address the issues of climate refugees and attitudes toward this contemporary phenomenon.

Through the project "Towards an open, just and sustainable Europe in the world - EU Presidency Project 2019-2021", CROSOL and SOLIDARNA will support schools, student homes and school clubs in their more powerful public activities during the Presidency of the Council of the Republic of Croatia EU from 1 January to 30 June 2020. They are launching a call for proposals through which students, schools and student/pupil homes across Croatia can receive up to 10,000 Croatian kuna for climate change campaigns and projects.

Nationwide teacher strike in Croatian primary and secondary schools
|
There is no quality education without satisfied teachers! GEW in Croatia corresponded to the third week of the circular teacher strike and the beginning of a full-blown nationwide strike of croatian primary and secondary teachers resulting in the fact that GEW activities could not be integrated in the classrooms. On the other hand this strike is the most successful one ever in modern croatian history and as some noticed - the biggest and most important civic education lesson for us all! On October 10th 2019 the biggest ever coordinated teacher and school staff strike began in Croatia after two biggest teachers’ unions had failed talks with the government refusing to accept their demand for a 6,1% increase of job-complexity coefficients. Both primary and secondary schools have been successful in implementing a nationwide circular strike for more than 30 days without a positive ending in sight. Their internal support is growing daily with approx. 90% of teachers and school staff participating in the 33th day of strike. Parents and citizens have shown their support for the struggle mostly through not sending their children to schools and not pressuring the unions to stop the strike. Through their fight for dignity of the teaching profession, teachers are expressing what it means to be engaged and active citizens and their struggle is supported by large numbers of parents, NGOs, other unions - showing solidarity with the cause in different ways.
