We saw solidarity in Slavonia, when will we see it in Brussels?

It has been 10 days since the refugees started arriving in large numbers to Croatia and a large number of volunteers of the “Welcome” Initiative participates in supporting refugees on the ground, earlier in Zagreb, Bregana and Harmica, and then in Slavonia – in Strošinci, Tovarnik, Bapska and Opatovac.

In addition to providing humanitarian aid, coordinating with local and foreign organizations and volunteers and sending them where they are needed, the volunteers, especially volunteers-translators, in the field proved to be the key link between refugees and institutions by providing them with information about the current procedure of entry and exit of refugees to and from Croatia.

The representatives of the “Welcome” Initiative appreciate the efforts of all staff involved in the field, but given the fact that no adequate plan has been adopted at the EU level to address this situation, they emphasize that the humanitarian crisis will not end anytime soon, and therefore propose to improve the conditions in the current reception center in Opatovac with regard to upcoming weather conditions. They also propose opening additional temporary reception centers, possibly in cooperation with the the State Office for State Property Management, so that refugees would not have to spend their nights in the open. In addition, it is necessary to ensure regular transportation of refugees from the point of entry to the reception centers, as well as systematic information flow among all those involved in supporting refugees – the police, army, representatives of the Ministry of Interior Affairs, the Croatian Red Cross and civil society organizations.

In this short period, clear and timely provision of information and guidance for refugees has proved to be the key factor of understanding. In order to avoid creating a tense atmosphere due to insufficient information provided to refugees, volunteers have created an information leaflet which is already being distributed in the camp in the field.

Unfortunately, all the positive efforts of the society to facilitate refugees’ way to safety by humanitarian action, will not be sufficient in the long run if, at the EU and the international level, the necessary shift is made towards the policy of human security, and that means a safe approach and passage to and through the territory of the European Union; the system of efficient acceptance, protection and a new model of integration with the suspension of the Dublin Regulation; political agreement on international humanitarian crisis, and the political, military and development strategy of action aimed at stopping the war in Syria and improving the political and socioeconomic conditions in the countries which people are forced to leave.
